Teeth whitening is used to reduce discolouration that develops on natural teeth over time by means of appropriate whitening agents. Treatment may be performed in the clinic or with custom-made trays prepared by a dentist for home use. Before whitening, the dentist evaluates decay, cracks, gum disease, sensitivity and existing fillings or restorations. Whitening affects natural tooth tissue only; the colour of fillings, crowns and veneers does not change. Temporary sensitivity may occur after treatment. The final shade and how long the result lasts vary according to the initial tooth colour, oral hygiene and habits that contribute to staining.
