Gum aesthetics, also called pink aesthetics, includes procedures that evaluate the relationship between the soft tissues surrounding the teeth and the smile. Different approaches may be considered for an uneven gum line, excessive gum display, gum recession or teeth that appear to have unequal lengths. Treatment may involve gum contouring, crown lengthening, soft-tissue grafting or management of an underlying periodontal cause. Before treatment, periodontal health, bone levels, tooth position and lip movement are assessed. The selected method is determined not only by appearance but also by gum health and the biological limits of the tissues.
